are used in teaching English in the higher educational institutions in
Uzbekistan. The article examines the most effective tools and their functions
in the teaching of English. The purpose of the article is to clarify digital
technologies essence in teaching English. Based on the purpose of the work, the
article will include: to review the existing literature on the chosen topic, to
analyze the main technological tools in learning English and to note the
advantages in the use of digital technologies. The following methods were
implemented: systemic approach, qualitative and historical methods. As a result
of this research, it becomes clear that the use of various digital tools that
are noted in the following article is a useful tool in a foreign language
acquisition, particularly, English. Digital tools are helpful as they offer
students to digest educational material with great interest. The use of digital
technologies creates new opportunities to teachers and tutors as well as to pupils
and students.
Digital technologies are considered as the latest innovative tools that
help educators organize their lessons in interactive way and enhance their
students’ competence in 21st century important skills. Technologies have
already become vital part of education. Regarding digital technologies students
obtain core skills for learning, work and society. Wide variations in
technology is useful for students to get adapted to their own studies, and they
can have access to big amount of information which teachers might not offer
during the class hours. In fact, traditional system of education is changing
constantly due to scientific and technological progress is accelerating.
Currently, great attention is paid to the introduction of various Internet
resources as a means of modernization of education. This is characterized by:
diversity and scale, as well as flexibility regarding place and time in the
organization of educational activities.
The main aim in studying any foreign language is enhancing of
communicative competence; all other goals can be obtained in the process of
achieving the main aim. Teaching a foreign language is creating a special
environment for students, which is associated with the use of various digital
tools to ease the process. Digital tools
are interactive systems that allow you to work with several media at once:
images, computer graphics with sound, statistical tools, video, etc. Students
receive a large amount of information from different information channels. It
is worth noting that sometimes even computer games are used in lessons for
educational purpose. As computer games are considered as an effective means of
developing students’ language competence. It is stated that a game is one of
the main types of activity, which can greatly facilitate the learning itself
and quickly master the materials. [7] Many researchers state that during the interactive
games information is perceived much easier and more effectively. Forms of
working with digital technologies in English lessons include: [1]
-
learning
vocabulary,
-
practicing
pronunciation,
-
learning writing,
-
practicing
grammar,
-
teaching monologue
and dialogue speech.
The use of digital technologies is necessary for professional teaching
that is relevant to everyday life. The focus is on how teaching and learning
should be organized today and how digital media can contribute to prepare young
generation ready to future professions. It can be ensured that digital tools
such as learning apps simplify educational processes and offer personalized
support to users. Additionally, the use of digital technologies enhances not
only target language skills, but also technical and media skills. Moreover, digital
learning tools can be used both inside and outside the classes. Depending, they
are suitable for offline and for online education. Individual and collaborative
learning can occur regardless of time and place.
Gamification in the classroom is not only entertaining, but also promotes
self-learning skills. In this case Quiz tools are great to start with
game-based lessons. With Kahoot!,
Quizacademy or Quizizz, one can not only make learning process more
entertaining, but also motivate through comparisons (ranking lists) or group
work (solving quizzes together).
Kahoot! - is a
game-based learning platform that brings engagement and fun to learn English language
on any device on any time.
QuizAcademy - a learning platform is a free and innovative learning platform for
students, professors and lecturers. It offers learning plan, which uses an
intelligent algorithm to tell user what they should learn so that they can
master their content until the exam. In addition to some gamification modes, it
also offers a live quiz function and an e-exam function that can be used
directly in the classroom. Extensive analyzes allow user to monitor their
learning progress and identify problem areas at an early stage.
Quizizz - is a
game-based learning platform. The structure of the quizzes is similar to
Kahoot, but the biggest difference is that students answer questions
individually on their device, allowing them to set their own pace of learning.
Various electronic textbooks, manuals, and
applications. Electronic supplements to
textbooks include training programs. Language learners can practice their
skills in grammar, vocabulary, writing and listening. Programs enable students
to better understand new material via graphical representations [8].
Multimedia tools. These days, the use of multimedia tools in the classroom has become essential. Day after day, students and teachers teach and learn to access information, collaborate, and exchange ideas using a variety of multimedia tools and electronic devices. Multimedia applications vary based on their features, ease of navigation, systems, and design. These digital tools and technical means are used to transfer information more effectively and master it by students. It includes all kinds of programs, graphs, diagrams, tables and, of course, multimedia presentations [6]. Not only can a teacher give a presentation, but a presentation can be assigned as homework for students of any educational institution. After all, by creating and presenting work forms language learners develop many skills and, above all, communication skills [10]. The most effective goals for introducing presentation into teaching are: learning new material, the process of illustration, as well as testing the learned material and consolidating new information [11]. Other skills and abilities that students develop while working with the presentation are described in the following table. Correlation of stages of work on presentations and developing skills and abilities [3]
Most of the tools in the list below are free, and many are multilingual
and offer functionality across multiple categories that can be useful tools for
parents, teachers, students, schools, and school administrators in the
education sector.
Zoom Classroom is one of the most popular video conferencing applications today. The
participant does not need to register for Zoom to join the online meeting room.
Technically, Zoom has many features that allow teachers to engage students in
virtual meetings, such as allowing multiple participants, recording, presenting,
white boarding, and more.
Google Meet is a free virtual meeting that can be accessed through Gmail. To use
this tool, users must first have a Gmail account. It is an easy tool to
navigate as most students and teachers have personal email, making it the best
multimedia tool.
Google Classroom is a learning management system (LMS) for teachers provided by Google.
The classroom can be used by teachers to streamline assignments, improve collaboration
and communication. In today's increasingly digital world, Google Classroom
helps students make online learning easier. Users can use Classroom tools such
as Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Calendar.
Modern tools in teaching a foreign language include electronic testing.
Thanks to it, the teacher can assess students' knowledge, or students can use a
self-testing tool. Internet resources provide a huge amount of different
information. For example, video, graphics sound recordings, animation. On the
Internet you can train vocabulary, grammar, phonetic skills, also read all
kinds of texts, watch videos and listen to audio recordings in English [4].
This category also includes training videos that can be watched online
and offline on the following Internet resources. For example, OneStopEnglish
(http://www.onestopenglish.com/) offers a large number of resources on reading,
listening, pronunciation, writing, speaking and vocabulary, as well as lesson
plans and ideas to engage students in learning English and activate training in
all essential skills [2]. Digital applications and electronic simulators for
teaching foreign languages can be identified as a separate category. Such
applications allow you to develop self-control. Among such applications it is
worth noting Surveymonkey, Easy Bib, Create-a-Graph.
And among the simulators that deserve attention: Letter Generator, Essay Map, Useful English. There are a lot of
similar resources and simulators, and everyone chooses the most convenient and
one for themselves [9].
SurveyMonkey is the world's most popular survey platform for collecting feedback and
turning it into actionable data.
EasyBib is the
world's largest bibliography and citation tool.
Create-a-Graph allows you to create various graphic forms of information representation,
such as graphs, tables, diagrams, etc.
Digital technology has several benefits for teaching and learning.
Firstly, students actively participate in the learning process, and this helps
them remember more information. Subsequent discussions then include more information
so students can become more independent. Students then improve their language
skills by studying course materials. It is clear that as students become more
independent, teachers must support their students to act and think independently. Summing up the results of the study, I would
like to highlight several positive factors in the use of Internet resources and
various digital tools in teaching English and any other foreign language [5]:
1. Ensuring sustainable motivation to learn the language
2. Creating a favorable atmosphere during the lesson
3. High degree of personalization in training
4.Increasing the volume of work performed in the lesson, as well as
increasing the amount of knowledge, skills and abilities in the lesson
5. Improving the quality of monitoring students’ knowledge
6.Organizing more rational educational process, which increases the effectiveness
of the lesson
7. Forming communication skills by using various materials
8. Providing students with access to various dictionaries, reference
books, libraries and other digital resources
Conclusion.
The use of various digital technologies that were mentioned in the work
is an effective tool in teaching a foreign language, in particular English.
Digital tools help students learn learning material with greater interest. The
use of modern technologies opens up new opportunities not only for teachers and
lecturers, but also for pupils and students. Multimedia tools combine important
elements such as texts, images, audio, videos, animation, and user controls.
Multimedia tools help students gain a deeper understanding of new material
because multimedia applications engage all the senses, including verbal
listening and visual display of knowledge, allowing the human brain to absorb
information more easily.
In addition, students have access to a wide range of information through
electronic devices, mainly communication gadgets, which are fully equipped,
making it easier for students to find any information they need. Now teachers
have the opportunity to make classes more fun and interesting by connecting
various technical means. Technology has a very big impact on the process of
learning and acquiring information or knowledge, so it helps teachers to make
language learning easier for students and also makes the teaching and learning
process more efficient and effective. The introduction of new equipment and
technology into education is our reality.
